As we quickly head toward the end of 2006, I realize that my time management skills are still not what they need to be for me to succeed in this brave new world (for me) of venture capitalism. Between seeing new companies, screening incoming deal flow, and trying to focus on our already existing portfolio, I am overwhelmed. Of course I am backed up by a great team, which definitely helps-- but its not enough.
I need to find time to exercise (have gone a week without really breaking a sweat), more time with my family, while balancing with community commitments. And meanwhile I am supposed to be coaching others on their own time management (my team, senior management at portfolio companies)...
And if you are reading this posting, you might realize that my daily blog has gone from somewhat daily to lucky if twice a week blog.
Not sure how to begin to better manage, but first thing is to spend more time with my kids, during with the upcoming holiday (dominant holiday Hanuka, here in Israel, but with some Christmas as well) period. I already know I will be traveling again relatively soon, to CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas January 8-10, and will probably be away again in February for 3GSM.
When I was CEO of one start-up, my balance was much easier. Waking moments were divided between company and family. Thank God I have the Sabbath,so at least one day a week was decided for me...but rest of my time was charging forward with whatever start-up it was at the time.
As venture capitalist I feel almost like a polygamist... our forefathers of old had multiple wives, with all the issues that leads to coming out in the text of the Biblical stories. Not so different as venture capitalist, with multiple "families [companies]." Very difficult to choose one over the other.
Well, as we move into the festival of lights I hope to shed some light into this issue, and come out with a brighter path for 2007.
For all those celebrating Hanuka, Happy Happy Hanuka. And for everyone, enjoy this clip:
